Queen Anthology

After what felt like an eternity, I finished my M.C. Escher inspired Killer Queen piece “Bicycle Bicycle Bicycle”. And now that Wizard World Philly is in town, I can finally unveil it!

It took me almost 85 hours to finish the linework on this and another 31 hours to finish the final art, but after putting in all that time, I have something intricate and fascinating to show for it. It’s a satisfying feeling and I’m quite happy to be moving on to other things.

The Killer Queen Anthology will be hitting the shelves this August! I’ll post a more specific date as soon as I find out.

Punk Rock Princess Peach

I’ve spent the past week in a total frenzy and it just paid off. I was working on a last-minute project for Wizard World Philly and managed to finish it just in time!

My art rep suggested that I create something video game themed this time, so I dreamt up a punk-rock version of Princess Peach from Super Mario Brothers.

I am so SO happy with this image! I think it came out great and it was extremely pleasant to work on.

I used my preferred media: Watercolors, gouache, and Prismacolor colored pencils on watercolor paper (with some ink in the outlines).

Queen Anthology (WIP)

For those of you who haven't already heard, Red Stylo Media (the publisher who brought you the Shakespeare Shaken Anthology) is putting together a new anthology of comic art- This time based on the life and works of the band Queen. It's called Killer Queen and it'll be hitting the shelves in August!

My contribution to the book is a surreal illustration called "Bicycle Bicycle Bicycle". It's based on the song Bicycle Race and draws really heavy inspiration from the vertigo inducing dreamscapes of M.C. Escher. I knew from the start that my concept was complicated and ambitious, but I massively underestimated how difficult it would be to place figures within an environment with such a strict three-point perspective. Making the racers actually look like they belonged in that space (as opposed to floating around it at random) was extremely time consuming.

After about 85 hours of hard work and seemingly infinite perspective tweaks, I finally finished the linework.

I don't usually do this, but since the linework took so long and required so many changes along the way, I thought it deserved it's own progress illustration. Enjoy.

Upcoming Events:
Wizard World Philly will soon be upon us! Even though I'm from South Jersey, I think of Philly as my hometown show, so I try to pull out all the stops. I'll be set up in Artists Alley from June 19th to June 22nd. Interview with ThatMusicMag

I finally got my hands on a copy of ThatMusicMag’s spring issue! I did an interview for them a few months ago and I’d been waiting with bated breath for it to finally hit the shelves!

I’ve gotta say, it is incredibly exciting to walk into the World Cafe Live and pick up a magazine that has my name in it.

Black Cat vs. Harley Quinn

Just finished another commission- This one was for a police officer who collects art from different comic artists and hangs it up in the station hallways.


He actually gave me one of the patches the Baltimore Police wear on their jackets (both to use as reference and to keep for myself), which is pretty damn cool.

And I think I've finally gotten the hang of drawing latex / PVC / shiny fabric without the aid of direct photo reference. Hooray for progress!

Con Season 2014

It's that time again... The snow will soon be melting away and when it does, con season will be upon us. Here's my schedule of events for the upcoming year:

Green = I will have my own table, so (if it's a con) look for me in Artist's Alley.

Orange = I'll be in attendance and might even be selling my work, but I won't have my own table. Look for me at the Stormwatch Comics booth.

Red = I'm attending, but not exhibiting. Chances are I'll be running around on the main floor, pestering publishers and persuading them to peruse my portfolio.

Pet Portrait - Jack

Creating a portrait for this sweet, super photogenic dog was a lot of fun!

I logged in twice as many hours as I'd estimated, but I feel like it really benefited from the extra time.

Phoenix Rising *NSFW*

At last year's Chicago Wizard World, I had the pleasure of meeting a fan of mine who had already collected a large number of my sketch covers and was very excited about the idea of commissioning a custom piece from me! He requested a nude rendition of Jean Grey from the Xmen, in all her wild glory as the Phoenix. I've been dying to draw this character, so I jumped at the chance!

I'm so very pleased with the finished product on this one. More often than not, when I'm working on a new illustration, it's a struggle. Unforeseen problems come up and you've got to improvise, maybe the materials don't behave the way you expect them to or a layout that looked okay in the early stages just isn't going to work in the final... So when a piece like this one comes along, where everything just falls into place effortlessly, it's such a joy. I'm especially proud of the reflected light underneath her breasts.

This was my first time experimenting with watercolor pencils and it was definitely a success. I look forward to incorporating them into future works.

I put some clothes on her after it was all finished so that I can sell prints to a wider audience when I'm on the road. Even the PG-13 version looks great.
I am SO happy with how this turned out.
