Luna Lovegood - Pt. 2

Friday, June 8, 2012

I managed to get this piece in the mail right before Philly Wizard World came to town. It was a rush job, but I'm still very pleased with how it turned out.

The client who commissioned it
was delighted when he saw it!

I'm really enjoying this new watercolor/colored pencil technique I've been working with lately, so don't be surprised if you see a lot more of it in the future!

The outfit Luna is wearing is from the movie, specifically Harry Potter and the Deathly
Hallows: Pt. 1, during Bill & Fleur's wedding.

Luna Lovegood Commission

Tuesday, May 29, 2012

I'm a giant Harry Potter fan, so when I got the request to illustrate Luna Lovegood for a customer, I jumped at the chance! I decided to go with Luna dancing at Bill and Fleur's wedding. It's based on a handful of passages from Book 7, Chapter 8:

Luna was wearing bright yellow robes, which she had accessorized with a large yellow sunflower in her hair. Once you got over the brightness of it all, the general effect was quite pleasant.

"I like this song," said Luna, swaying in time to the waltzlike tune, and a few seconds later she stood up and glided onto the dance floor, where she revolved on the spot, quite alone, eyes closed … waving her arms around her head like someone attempting to beat off midges.

Technically, she shouldn't be wearing her radish earrings in this scene, but they're just so distinctive that I couldn't resist including them in the final piece.

I had a bit of trouble in the beginning with her face, but I think I've finally managed to give her the proper dreamy look. (Here's what the first version looked like, if you're curious.) I have good feelings about this piece. I'm really excited to see how it looks after I add the colors!
